How to change drive letter in window XP

Note: D:\ drive change to C:\

Make a full system backup of the computer and system state.
Log on as an Administrator.

1.Start Regedt32.exe (or Regedit.exe in Windows XP).

2.Go to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

3.Click MountedDevices.

4.On the Security menu, click Permissions.

5.Check to make sure Administrators have full control. Change this back when you are finished with these steps.

6.Quit Regedt32.exe, and then start Regedit.exe.

7.Go to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

8.Find the drive letter you want to change to (new). Look for "\DosDevices\C:".

9.Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename. In Windows 2000 you must use Regedit instead of Regedt32 to rename this registry key.

10.Rename it to an unused drive letter "\DosDevices\Z:". (This will free up drive letter C: to be used later.)

11.Find the drive letter you want changed. Look for "\DosDevices\D:".

12.Right-click \DosDevices\D:, and then click Rename.

13.Rename it to the appropriate (new) drive letter "\DosDevices\C:".

14.Click the value for \DosDevices\Z:, click Rename, and then name it back to "\DosDevices\D:".

15.Quit Regedit, and then start Regedt32 (not required in Windows XP).

16.Change the permissions back to the previous setting for Administrators (this should probably be Read Only).

17.Restart the computer.

cannot show hidden files and folders

If your computer cannot show hidden files and folders even user enable the 'show hidden files' setting from folder option. Sometimes a virus, spyware or scripts make it happened.

the solution:

1. Go to your Start > Run, type regedit and press enter. This will open registry editor.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL

DELETE the value CheckedValue in the right window if it already there and type is REG_SZ.Now create a new DWORD value again with the same name CheckedValue.

3. Double click 'CheckedValue', and change data value (DWORD Value) to 1.

If still folder options is reverted back to don’t show hidden files and folders then it could be due to some virus still in action.

Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden NOHIDDEN

In the NOHIDDEN folder, select CheckedValue change value to 1
